ATP Finals & Laver Cup in Your Tennis Club – Team Formats Explained
ATP Finals and Laver Cup formats for your club: how the two pro team formats work and how to run them with your members.
Pro formats for your club: why not?
The ATP Finals and the Laver Cup are among the most exciting events in professional tennis. Both have something that club tennis often lacks: team spirit, tactical depth and a real sense of occasion. The good news – you can bring both formats to your club.
The ATP Finals format
The ATP Finals format is the best of both worlds: a group stage first, then knockouts.
How it works
- 8 players are split into 2 groups of 4
- In the group stage everyone plays everyone (round robin)
- The top 2 of each group qualify for the semifinals
- Semifinals: winner of group A vs. runner-up of group B, and vice versa
- Then the final
Why it's perfect for clubs
- Every player gets at least three matches (group stage)
- There's still an exciting final
- Compact: ideal for a weekend event with 8 players
- Works as a season finale for the top 8 of your league
The Laver Cup format
The Laver Cup format brings real team feeling to the club: two teams compete in singles and doubles.
How it works
- 2 teams of 6–8 players each
- Singles and doubles are played in turn
- The twist: rising points – day-one matches count 1 point, day two 2 points, day three 3 points
- The team with the most points wins
Team setups
- By age: young vs. experienced
- By gender: ladies vs. gentlemen
- By draw: random teams
- By membership: long-time members vs. newcomers
ATP Finals vs. Laver Cup
ATP Finals: individual competition, 8 players, group stage + knockout, 1–2 days.
